A study into sports organisers’ rights within the European Union has ruled that there are no legal grounds for an EU-wide right to consent to bets. The study, which was funded by the European Commission and undertaken by the Dutch Asser Institute in conjunction with the University of Amsterdam , was designed to clarify the rights of EU based sports organisers, paying particular attention to sports betting operators. According to the study ; “costs associated with the administering of the right to consent to bets will always be considerable and there is no evidence for a link between the financial return stemming from a right to consent to bets and the financing...

Coral blames bookies closures on UK gambling reforms

Coral has become the latest UK high street bookmaker to blame new governmental legislation for the need to close a number of betting shops across the country. Coral’s parent company, Gala Coral has released their second-quarter financial figures, which show a three percent rise to £215m in the group’s gross profits. However, the government's recently introduced measures - particularly the ABB Code on betting terminals - are hitting the retail-end of the business hard. A bad year for bookies Like Ladbrokes and William Hill, Coral is claiming that the government's new "protections and controls" are a reaction “to scaremongering and mi...

A Northern Vegas? It can’t come soon enough

A casino found its way into headlines last year and (for once) the coverage nothing to do with addiction. Northern Soul celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013, leading a number of influential figures from the British culture industry (including Paul Mason ) to fondly recall the moment this seminal music scene erupted in 1973. The Wigan Casino’s infamous ‘all-nighters’ served as the cradle of Northern Soul, becoming an important source of catharsis in an region beset by football hooliganism, terrorism and industrial decline. It’s a truism that history has a way of repeating itself. In 2014, Northern England is racked by poverty, urban decay and social unr...

William Hill has revealed that a man in England has placed the huge sum of £400,000 on Scotland voting No in the independence referendum later this year - thought to be the biggest political prop bet of all time. The brave bet was placed by an unnamed, middle aged man from Surrey at one of William Hill's South West London branches. The bookmakers said that he did not have a Scottish accent. With odds of 1/4 that the Scots will reject independence on September 18, the mystery man stands to net £100,000 if he wins. Graham Sharpe, a spokesman from William Hill said that as far as they could tell, "this is the biggest political bet ever struck." High stakes ...

Putin invites casinos to set up shop in annexed Crimea

Russian President, judo enthusiast and humanitarian, Vladamir Putin, has just approved a ‘gambling zone’ in Crimea, which was annexed from Ukraine in March. Parliamentarians in Russia have argued that this new provision will attract investment and encourage tourism to the region (though presumably not by plane). Gambling? It's not a Crime-a! The Russian government is eager to ensure that images like these don't predominate in the public consciousness when it comes to Crimea. Good luck to them. The annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in March (which Putin himself has described as “virtually bloodless”) has led to pro-Russian separatists to viole...
