The Church of Scotland has called for an end to gambling advertisements in Sport. Just a week after Glasgow Rangers announced a new shirt sponsorship deal with 32Red , the Church of Scotland published a report entitled Striving Together: Celebrating Competitiveness in Sport  which calls for both the Scottish and UK governments to ban problematic gambling adverts' involvement in sport. Local councils are to be given enhanced powers over the granting of gambling licences to betting shops within their constituencies. According to the BBC , this new authority will enable councils to decline a bookmaker’s planning application, should a they deem there to be enough existing locations already in the area. The new powers are to be introduced following a review of UK gambling policies, the findings of which of due to be disclosed by the government later on this week. Previously, players were able to bet up to £100 every 20 seconds on FOBTs, stirring up controversy from certain segments of the media . The bill, which made it through the House of Lords two months ago, amends the 2005 Gambling Act in order to establish greater security for online players.
