In conversation with the national press, Koike claimed that an integrated resort of the kind that has been moored for many years “would make the city more attractive”. As it stands, such facilities are illegal under Japanese law. Morichika Saito is the mayor of Iizuka City in Japan’s Fukuoka prefecture. He is also a big mah-jong fan. The latter has now cost Mayor Saito his job. When news broke that Mr Saito (above seated) was playing mah-jong with Deputy Mayor Hideaki Tanaka “during the office hours of general employees”, both the press and the general public went berserk.
