Paddy Power's Oscar ad 'most complained about ad of 2014'

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in the UK has revealed that Paddy Power's advert featuring South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorious was the most complained about advert in the UK in 2014. Paddy Power's advert, which appeared in both the UK press and the Irish bookmaker's website, offered punters the chance of betting on the outcome of Pistorious' trial in which he was accused of murdering Reeva Steenhamp, his girlfriend, in February 2013. The advert offered gamblers the following deal: “IT’S OSCAR TIME. MONEY BACK IF HE WALKS. WE WILL REFUND ALL LOSING BETS ON THE OSCAR PISTORIUS TRIAL IF HE IS FOUND NOT GUILTY.  PADDY POWER.&rdquo...

Paddy Power have signed a new £20 million advertising account with Beattie McGuinness Bungay, who successfully beat off competition from M&C Saatchi, Grey London, Enter and Fold 7 to land the deal. Gaming Realms brand Spin Genie had its two latest adverts banned over fears they would appeal to underage players. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the UK’s advertising watchdog, ruled that the child-like nature of both adverts, one of which was shown on television, meant that they had to be pulled. In the 30 second TV clip set in a Treasure Island style environment, a rhyming poem is narrated and coins cascade down a hill after a big gold coin is smashed. One complainant challenged whether the advert would influence under 18s, as well as raising concerns over the Spin Genie homepage. On the website, a cartoon dog called Spin had links titled ‘join,&rsquo...

William Hill, one of the UK's largest and most well-established bookmakers, has had three complaints against its use of children in gambling advertisements upheld. The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld the three complaints concerning the @WillHillBet twitter feed, saying advertisements placed via the account that featured gambling were likely to appeal to children. The first ad, which was released just as the Masters golf tournament was scheduled to begin, featured a picture of a child leaping into the air while brandishing a golf club. The other two ads about which complaints were received featured two teddy bears wearing crowns. The bears - one pink and one blue - wer...

Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio – between them they’ve picked up three Oscars, 21 Academy Award nominations, eight Golden Globes and a quartet of BAFTAs. The connections between then three men run very deep. De Niro starred opposite DiCaprio in the then-15-year-old's first feature film, This Boy’s Life while Leonardo was directed by the Raging Bull star in the espionage thriller The Good Shepherd.
