Wizard of Oz – Ruby Slippers is a 5-reel max 30-pay line online slot from WMS (Williams Interactive). It's one of three games that WMS have so far eased out of their award of the Wizard of Oz franchise, the others being simply called 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Wizard of Oz – Ruby Slippers 2' which of course is a follow up to this game. Just in case you didn't know, all Wizard of Oz slots are based on the 1939 film musical 'The Wizard of Oz' which in turn is based on the book 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' by Frank Baum, published in 1900. In the story a young girl (played in the film musical by the then 17-years-old Judy Garland) is having issues with her life on her aunt and uncle's farm, and is swept away by a magical whirlwind to the mysterious land of Oz. She is then told by a fairy that her only hope of getting home is to visit the 'Wizard of Oz' in the Emerald City. Along the way she makes three friends – the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. All the while she wears ruby slippers (originally silver in the book) as purloined from the Wicked Witch of the East, whom Dorothy's house had landed upon. Eventually she clicks her heels together while chanting 'there's no place like home' and awakens to find it was all a dream … maybe!

Dorothy and all her friends make appearances on the reels, including Toto, the nightmare-inducing Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.

To play this game you begin by selecting your bet-per-line from 0.01 to 2.00, and the number of lines you want in play from one to thirty. Your total bet is these two values multiplied. When you're ready to go off and see the wizard, hit the spin button.

Payout & bonus rounds

The lowest winning payouts are x5 your bet-per-line for three hourglasses, lollipops, baskets or apples. The maximum win is achieved by landing five jackpot symbols, which wins a wizardly 12,000x your line bet.

The 'Wizard of Oz' symbol is wild in this game and substitutes for the hourglass, lollipop, basket, apple, Wicked Witch, Toto, Glinda and 'Friends' symbol.

The Wizard of Oz himself serves as the scatter symbol in this game. Three of the wiz earns you a free re-spin, four earns you a prize of five times your total bet and a re-spin, and five earns you a re-spin and ten times your total bet.

The 'Ruby Slipper' feature occurs randomly in this game. Dorothy will appear and click her heels together, turning one or more of the reels completely wild. If you spin a win, a futher multiplier may appear to ramp up your good fortune – you could end up with a 2x, 5x or 10x multiplier.

If you land an individual character symbol on any of the first four reels, plus a Wicked Witch, Wizard or Crystal Ball symbol on reel five you are awarded a free re-spin where the only symbols on the reels are high-paying character symbols.

There are three other features in this game – the 'Find the Broom' feature, the 'Emerald City Freespin Feature' and the 'Crystal Ball Feature'. You can read about these features in the game's help files as the rigmarole surrounding them is quite complicated!

It has to be said that while there are a decent number of features in this game, the number of times they actually arrive (in our experience of playing this game anyhow) are few and far between, aside perhaps from the 'Ruby Slippers' feature. There are also just too many symbols so it's hard to keep track of what is actually happening, and how close you are to either a big win or earning a feature. All-in-all, it's a bit OTT. We'd advise you to follow the Yellow Brick Road and try one of WMS's other Oz-themed efforts.
