Space Lights is a cool-looking 5-reel fixed pay line online slot from Playson that's definitely a little out of this world. Once upon a time (not so long ago) the online slots experts NetEnt released a little game called Starburst. This game has (along with Gonzo's Quest) become one of the most popular slots games on the net, and other software companies have released Starburst-like games in the hope of cashing in a little on NetEnt's successful slot. It seems that with 'Space Lights' Playson has become the latest software company to try a little Starbursting of its own, although this is very much a separate game in its own right, and not a clone. It has a very Starburst-y look and feel, though.

The symbols here are triangles, squares, diamonds and circles, and in multiple dimensions. The rule is that generally the more 'solid' a symbol looks, the bigger the jackpot it will attain for you should you land enough of them on an active pay line. There are also a couple of wild symbols that can multiply any jackpot win by a considerable degree.

There are fifteen pay lines, and that's a fixed number. Note that pay lines only pay from left to right and not the other way around as well. When choosing your bet amount you are effectively betting fifteen coins per spin, so your coin size is anything from 0.01 to 20.00. When you're ready to launch, hit the spin button.

Payout & bonus rounds

The lowest prize payout in this game is one fifth of your bet-per-spin, which is secured by landing three triangles or squares. Top of the shop when it comes to payouts is a dodecahedron which wins you ten times your total bet if you land five of them.

The 'wild' here is a large 'W' in a yellow hexagon. Landing five on a pay line wins you twenty times your total bet, and wilds substitute for ALL other symbols.

Upon every spin a 'portal' opens up above one of the reels at random. If the top-most symbol on this reel is part of a winning combination then it is transformed into a sticky wild and triggers the 'Space Light' mode. If you earn sticky wilds in this mode you are awarded an extra re-spin. Also, the portal will transform symbols immediately below any sticky wild into sticky wilds themselves should that symbol form part of a new winning combination. This mode quits once no new sticky wilds are added.

The portal will sometimes appear between the fourth and fifth reels. This means the rules above apply to the fourth and fifth reel simultaneously.

If you manage to complete an entire reel of sticky wilds then you are awarded a bonus prize. A counter counts one for the first sticky wild, two for the second and three for the third. These values are then added together, along with the number of other wilds you achieved during 'Space Light' mode. A further x2 or x3 multiplier depending on whether two or three symbols on the reel form part of a winning combination multiplies your final win.

This slot might sound quite complicated but actually, it isn't. Once you've got the concept of 'Space Light' mode nailed down, it's a very easy game to play. It's also a genuinely exciting one once the portal starts turning symbols into sticky wilds and they begin to spread down the screen. It's not quite Starbutrst, but it's a very noble effort by Playson.
