Monkey King Slot
Monkey King is a 5-reel, 351-pay line slot from Yggdrasil Gaming. That unusual number of available pay lines needs to be explained, we feel. The object of the game is to score at least three identical symbols on adjacent rows anywhere on the reels. You don't have to start your combination on the left-hand reel, though, you can start it anywhere on the first three, so we reckon the maths is (3x3x3x3x3)+(3x3x3x3)+(3x3x3) which equals 351 pay lines. We tried to do the maths a second time to check but it gave us a headache.
Anyhow, this is an Asian-themed game from Yggdrasil Gaming starring the self-appointed 'Monkey King' – a cool-looking monkey primed for some martial arts. We're not sure why he has declared himself to be king of the monkeys. We feel it's only a temporary position until King Kong hears about it and comes a-knocking.
The symbols are all oriental-related in a way – chalices, bowls of excotic sweeties, mysterious bottles plus playing card suits (not values). You can choose the value of your coin from 0.01 to 5.00, but there is a fixed fee of twenty-five coins per spin, so the range of bets is from 0.25 to 125.00. When you're ready to bow before the feet of the monkey king, hit the spin button.
Payout & bonus rounds
The lowest winning pay out is for three identical playing card values – this will win you three coins. The jackpot of two hundred and fifty coins is won by securing five bronze chalices.
There are two types of wilds in this game – 'Sticky Wilds' and 'Count Down Wilds'. A sticky wild will remain in its position until the next round, and remains in place as long as you keep winning. Sticky wilds only appear on reels two and four. Count down wilds stay for three more spins, and count down once upon each spin. These wilds only appear on the middle reel. Both kinds of wilds substitute for all symbols aside from the free spins symbol.
The Monkey King is a welcome sight while you're spinning. He appears randomly and changes one symbol into a different one, and always to your advantage.
The treasure chest symbol in the base game gives up to one thousand coins and triggers the free spin mode. During free spins, the treasure chest symbol also gives up to one thousand coins and triggers two extra free spins. The treasure chest symbol only appears on the fifth reel.
If you land three or more free spins symbols anywhere on the reels then you trigger free spins. Note that if you land four free spins symbols you earn a one thousand coin bonus, and if you land more than four you earn a five thousand coin bonus.
There are three features you can choose for your free spins mode:
- Incremental wilds (six free spins) – the monkey king adds one permanent sticky wild on the second or fourth reel for each spin, until those reels are completely filled with wilds.
- Stacked wilds (eight free spins) – sticky wilds on the second and fourth reels are permanently sticky. A special 'triple stacked wild' that is not sticky can land on the third reel.
- Starting wilds (ten free spins) – you begin your freebies with a permanent sticky wild in the middle position. Sticky wilds that appear on the second and fourth reels become permanently sticky.
This game has everything a contemporary online slots game should have – individual and inventive features and a range of choices when it comes to nominating how to play your free spins. This is almost as far away from a standard 'wilds and scatters' game as you can get, and the graphics ain't too bad either. A wonderful slots game from Yggdrasil that you're likely to go (monkey) nuts over!
