Green Lantern Slot
Green Lantern is a 5-reel, fixed 50-pay line online slots game from NextGen Gaming in collaboration with DC Comics. It's one of three DC Comics superhero-themed slots that were released by NextGen in the summer of 2016. The other superheros finding new slots games based upon their antics were Batman and The Flash.
The Green Lantern is perhaps the least-known of this super heroic trio, especially in the UK. By day, Mr Lantern is the humble Hal Jordan (or Alan Scott in the original version), a US test pilot. Hal is handed a powerful ring and a battery (called a lantern for some reason) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. By gaining access to this power Hal automatically becomes a member of the Lantern Corps, a galactic police force. Entertaining adventures ensue … except in the overwhelming poor 2011 film version that starred Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.
Joining his greenness on the reels are playing card values nine through to ace, a few members of the Lantern Corps, and a 'Guardian of the Galaxy' – one of the aliens responsible for empowering the galactic cops. Of course no superhero is complete with the presence of a supervillian, and here the ultimate bad-ass is Sinestro, who looks like a war-time spiv who has been under the sunbed a bit too long.
There are fifty lines in play and that's a fixed number. You can choose your coin size – anything from 0.01 to 2.00 – and it costs fifty coins for each spin. You can pay an extra ten coins as a 'bonus bet' to activate extra features. When you're ready to go green, hit the spin button.
Payout & bonus rounds
The biggest payout in this game is awarded by landing five of the red-faced Sinestro, which wins you an impressive ten thousand coins. The lowest payout is for three nines or tens – this will win five times your bet-per-line.
The Green Lantern is wild in this slot, but only appears on reels two and four. He substitutes for all symbols aside from the scattered ring and bonus symbols. All wins containing a wild are doubled in the base game and quadrupled during free spins.
You can win twenty-four free games when the Green Lantern appears on reels two and four, and the Lantern symbol appears on reel three. During free spins, every Lantern symbol that appears adds an extra Green Lantern to reels two and four during your freebies.
If you have the bonus bet activated then you have access to the 'ring feature' and the ring scatters. You need to land two ring scatters anywhere on the reels to trigger a win. You can also land at least two 'bonus ring' symbols on the reels to win cash, but if you land three or more you activate the bonus feature. Here you can win up one hundred times your triggering bet.
All wins can be gambled, and you can gamble up to five times in succession. You have to guess either the colour (to double your win) or the suit (to quadruple your win) of a hidden playing card. Guess right and you're in the money, but guess wrong and it's goodbye win!
The Green Lantern has never really taken off as a super hero in the minds of UK comic fans, and while we feel this slot is not likely to share the same fate, it's still a few quarters short of being a superhero itself among online slot games. It's very similar to the other recent NextGen Gaming DC Comics releases, and a little old-fashioned too. In short, if you're telling your fellow casino gambling fans that you're playing the Green Lantern slot, they're not very likely to turn green with envy.
