Frankenstein Slot
Frankenstein is a 5-reel, max 20-pay line online slot produced by NetEnt in association with Universal Studios. This slot is based on the ground-breaking 1931 movie made by Universal and directed by legendary horror movie master James Whale. It starred Colin Clive as Dr Henry Frankenstein, Dwight Frye as his hunchbacked helper Fritz (note, not Egor) and horror acting icon Boris Karloff as 'The Monster' (as pedants will no doubt love to tell you, 'Frankenstein' is the name of the doctor in this story. The being he created by shoving a brain into a dead body and then re-animating it was known as 'the monster').
The original story of Frankenstein was penned way back in 1816 by Mary Shelley – wife of the poet Mary Shelley. Conceived in one night, Shelley spent two years writing the novel in three parts, it being published in 1818 when she was only twenty years of age. This novel was more a philosophical, gothic tale than a horror story as the 'monster' was no lumbering giant but instead was intelligent and capable of eloquent speech. The theme of the novel was of the creature's lust for his rights to 'a normal life' as would he expect had he been born normally.
This slot though is firmly based on the 1933 movie. Dr Frankenstein, Fritz and The Monster all appear on the reels, as does 'The Brain' and playing card symbols nine through to ace. There are twenty lines in this slot, and you can select as many as you want in play with each spin, from one to all twenty. You may also select your coin size, from 0.01 to 0.50, and your bet level from one to ten. Your final bet-per-spin is your coin size multiplied by your bet level multiplied by the number of lines that you have in play. When you're ready to exclaim "It's Alive!" hit the spin button.
Payout & bonus rounds
The lowest possible pay out in this monster of a slot is for three 'nine' symbols. Land three on an active pay line in sequence from the left hand reel and you win three coins. For a monster pay out you need to land five of 'The Monster' himelf – this will win you one and a half thousand coins.
There are two wild symbols in this game, and they both are 'linked' wilds in that when they land they link to character symbols turning all symbols along the path they trace to wilds. The lightning wild appears on the central three reels and substitutes for all other symbols aside from the scatter symbol. The fire wild appears on the central three reels as well and substitutes for all symbols aside from the scatter and the multiplier. The fire wild appears on EVERY free spin.
A 'burning mill' symbol is the scatter symbol in this slot. If you land three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels then you earn yourself ten free spins. If you land two scatters during free spins then you earn five bonus spins, and three or more will earn you an additional ten.
A multiplier symbol appears on the right-hand reel and increases the win multiplier by one every time it lands, up to a maximum of x5. The multiplier symbol is then removed from the reels when the x5 multiplier is reached.
While this is a classic slot, it's not quite as classic as the 1930s horror movie upon which it is based. It has many nice features though, although the addition of a 'pitchforks and torches' pursuit game might have been a good idea. A monster slot? Maybe not, but you won't need a new brain if you find yourself enjoying many a spin of this NetEnt title.
