Creature from the Black Lagoon is a monstrous 5-reel, fixed 20-pay line slot from NetEnt. This terrifying slot is based on the 1954 black and white creature feature of the same name. That film starred Richard Carlson, Julia Adams, Richard Denning and Antonio Moreno (nope, we haven't heard of any of them either) as a team of scientists hunting for fossils. They uncover a very unexpected fossil – a living, breathing, half-man, half-fish. Mr Fishy subsequently falls in love with one of the scientists (the lady one, obviously, this being the 1950s) and takes her to his watery domain. It's up to brave Dr Reed (Carlson) to do manly things with a harpoon in order to save the lady scientist from being impregnated and giving birth to hundreds of guppys. Later, Mr Fishy is forced to defend himself in court from King Kong, who is annoyed at having the plot from his own movie so flagrantly plagarised.

This game starts off with a short movie-style sequence in which the creature makes an appearance. All the symbols used relate to the film – the four movie 'stars', plus scuba-diving equipment, binoculars and an underwater camera. There are twenty pay lines in this game, and they are fixed. You can choose your coin value from 0.01 to 0.50, and your bet level from one to ten. Once all those are set, your final wager is your coin size x your bet level x 20. When you're ready to brave the deep, dark waters of the black lagoon, hit the spin button.

Payout & bonus rounds

The lowest payout of 4x your line bet is achieved by landing three knives or cameras. The jackpot is accrued by landing five of the buxom Kay.

There are three different wild symbols for you to contend with. There are all 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' logos, but in three different colours – green, yellow and red. The latter two are spreading wilds. They substitute for all other symbols except for the 'Free Spins' symbol and the target symbol. All wilds are sticky and remain on the reels for one re-spin.

You need to land at least three free spin symbols anywhere on the reels to win free spins. You need three free spins symbols for ten freebies, four for fifteen and twenty for five. You can win more free spins during your freebies. As the free spins roll, you can collect target symbols to take pot shots at Mr Fishy. The more hits he takes, the better it becomes for you. Spreading wilds are released onto the reels, and if you can shoot him nine times, you get another ten free spins.

The animation in this game is of course, wonderful. There is no one else that does '3D' slots animation better than NetEnt, as anyone whom has played any of their games will surely tell you. Even when 'The Creature' pops up from beneath the waves for the tenth you still get a little shock. Sadly though, the animation is the best thing about this game. The gameplay is certainly a lot tamer than 'The Creature', and it soon becomes a repetitive game that's only fun to play when you land free spins. It's a shame really, as the graphics and animations deserve much better treatment.
