Big 5 Safari Slot
Big 5 Safari is a 5-reel, fixed 20-pay line online slot from Nektan. Nektan have not really made much of a splash in the world of online slots so far. They do run a number of online casinos – Spin Princess, Sapphire Rooms and Northern Lights Casino are but three – and those casinos use Nektan's software. In fact some of Nektan's casinos only use Nektan's software. However, most of Nektan's software is just not all that good.
Big 5 Safari may then be a step in the right direction. It certainly looks superb, with wonderfully rendered symbols of some of the critters you'll find wandering about the plains of Africa. Let's hope it's a 'look and see safari'. Big game hunting is a complete no-no these days, as well it should be. Unless you're a dentist who wants their reputation trashed on social media.
The 'Big 5' are lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffalo. These were considered the five most-prized trophies desired by hunters when times were much nastier. They are joined on the reels by playing card symbols jack through to ace, plus three special symbols. You select your bet by clicking the 'Stake & Lines' button. You cannot actually change the number of lines, but you can select your stake: 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 or 1.0. Your total bet is your stake multiplied by twenty. When you're ready to go hunting some elephant-sized jackpots, hit the spin button (you may have to look for it as it's 'hidden' in the tyre of the jeep to the right of the screen).
Payout & bonus rounds
The lowest winning pay out in this game is for three jacks. This will win you ten coins. Kingle of the jackpot jungle is the leopard. Land five of this speedy spotty cat and you'll win two thousand coins.
A zebra acts as the wild symbol in this game. This symbol substitutes for all other symbols aside from the sticky wild symbol and the bonus symbol.
The springbok is a sticky wild. When you land three or more of them, the springboks will 'spring' onto an adjacent symbols and turn them into sticky wilds. Each sticky wild will remain in place for a certain number of spins, and then disappear.
A compass is the 'bonus' symbol here. If you land three or more anywhere on the reels, then the background changes to a night-time scene and you are awarded six free spins.
Despite the high quality of the graphics, this is a pretty mundane game. The game mechanics leave a lot to be desired as well – there is no autoplay, and almost no information about how the game plays. The game seems slow too. If Nektan are hoping the challenge the likes of NetEnt and Microgaming, they're going to have to do a lot better than this.
