Northern Lights Casino in a nutshell
Northern Lights Casino is an online casino that’s powered, like many others, by Nektan (Gibraltar) Limited. Established early on in 2015, Northern Lights Casino has been brightening people’s gambling lives ever since.
If you’ve played at a few online casinos, then the chances are that you’ve played at a Nektan-powered casino before. The company has helped breathe life into around twenty online casinos. Among their most popular offerings are GoWin Casino, Kerching Casino and Pocket Vegas casino.
While Nektan-based casinos are often applauded for their dedication to mobile channels, they all come in for some common critcisms. The main beef is the lack of casino games besides slots. We’ll see if Northern Lights Casino can be accused of being too slots-heavy.
So, will Northern Lights Casino be lighting up your gambling evenings, or will you prefer to be left in the dark? Why not keep on reading to find out?
What’s the look and feel of Northern Lights Casino?
Northern Lights Casino has made a bit of an effort to move beyond the standard Nektan fare, but it’s very confusing. As well as the games blooper we mentioned above, we noticed that on the landing page the text labels underneath the thumbnails for slots are all out by one: ‘Fiesta’ is labelled King Kong (or ‘KingKong’ to be exact), and ‘Gunslinger’s Gold’ is labelled ‘Fiesta’, and so on. It’s a bit shoddy, to be honest.
What games are available at Northern Lights Casino?
As we mentioned above, Nektan-powered casinos usually come in for criticism for the lack of games beyond slots. If you love online slots, then basically that’s not a problem. Two top providers – NetEnt and NextGen Gaming – are in use here, so at the very least you get some very fine slots such as Jimi Hendrix, Flowers and Gorilla Go Wild.
Now for an oddity – when you click on the ‘casino’ section at the site, you get to see the list of five games (baccarat, 2x blackjack and 2x roulette) the site says it has. However, click on any game and you just get passed through to the Nektan-skinned version of the site, which only has the standard three Nektan games, 2x blackjack and one version of roulette. Very strange.
As usual with Nektan-powered casinos, there are no versions of baccarat, video poker, casino poker or anything beyond slots, roulette, blackjack and a few scratch cards. Definitely no live casino games here, either.
Software is provided by NetEnt and NextGen Gaming.
The site is designed to be run on a tablet, but smart phones work just as well, as do desktops and laptops.
No live support – best you can hope for is email or telephone.
What promotions are available at Northern Lights Casino?
Northern Lights Casino uses all the standard Nektan bonuses. The first bonus is a £5 free bonus that you do not even have to make a deposit to receive. Just sign up and that fiver is yours, although it does come with some very hefty wagering requirements – you have to wager £500 in order to withdraw any winnings you might make from it, and the maximum amount of cash you can win is £20.
The other deposit-based bonuses at Northern Lights Casino come with more realistic wagering conditions of forty times the deposit and bonus amount. You qualify for bonuses on your first three deposits as long as you deposit at least £10 each time. The schedule of bonuses is as follows:
- 1st deposit: 200% bonus up to £50
- 2nd deposit: 100% bonus up to £200
- 3rd deposit: 50% bonus up to £250
We noticed that the graphics associated with these bonuses mentions the 30x wagering, but the Northern Lights Casino T&Cs mention 40x. 30x is the standard for Nektan but as there is no live support here to ask, 40x is what we’re going to have to go for. Winnings are capped at four times the bonus amount.
You bonus lasts for twenty-eight days, so if you haven’t met your wagering requirements by then, you will lose your bonus cash. Note that both blackjack and roulette do not count towards wagering requirements, only slots and (we presume) scratch cards.
Bonuses at Northern Lights Casino stretch beyond your deposit bonus. At the time of writing the site was offering a £100 matched deposit on slots, ten bonus spins on offer every Friday if you deposit at least £10, and another 100% matched bonus up to £100 on offer every Friday.
Nektan does usually have a VIP scheme, but we could find no mention of it here. We assume then that Northern Lights Casino have not signed up for it.
The site accepts a number of payment options, including the ability to pay by your mobile phone bill. Also accepted are Visa and MasterCard credit and debit cards, Paysafecard (still refered to as ‘Ukash’ on the site) and Skrill. You can’t seem to use Neteller here. The minimum deposit is £10, and the maximum is £10,000 per day (Skrill) or £2,500 per day (cards). There are no fees and deposits are processed instantly.
You can use all the same methods to withdraw except pay by mobile (you’ll get sent a cheque instead). The minimum accepted withdrawal is £10, and the maximum is £10,000 per day (Skrill) or £20,000 per week (cards). Withdrawals are processed within two to three working days.
The final verdict
We’re of the opinion that Nektan-based casinos are ‘adequate’ (the lack of non-slots is the main discouraging factor), but this one of of the least adequate Nektan-based casinos we’ve encountered so far. It’s almost as if this online casino was built in a rush on top of Nektan’s white label solution and then left to stagnate. We’ve no idea why the wagering requirements are 40x when the Nektan standard is 30x, and why there are a couple of bugs (non-existent games) that have not been rectified.
We cannot promise you an illuminating online casino experience if you choose to gamble at Northern Lights Casino.
