Gambling with credit and debit cards

Credit cards are a means of making purchase ‘on credit’, i.e. the credit card company pays the merchant, and payment is made by the credit card holder at a later date. Most credit cards charge fees and interest payments for their use. The first recognised credit card was the BankAmericard issued in 1958 by the Bank of America.

Debit cards are different in that funds are drawn directly from a payee’s bank account, even though there is often a delay of a couple of days before transactions are enacted. Debit card payments can be refused if insufficient funds are found to be in the payee’s account. Debit cards have only been around since the 1980s.

Credit and debit cards are by far the most popular way of depositing and withdrawing funds from online gambling accounts. The leading credit/debit card providers are Visa and MasterCard. Other popular providers are Discover, Diner’s Club, JCB and American Express.

Legality

All casinos below that accept credit and debit card payments are legitimate and verified.

Some casinos will insist on a minimum payment when depositing funds using a credit or debit card, but often this as low as $5. You’ll be unlikely to find a casino that offers a special deal for using a credit or debit card to fund your account.

In countries where gambling is prohibited, or where it is considered to be a grey market, it is likely that banks will block payments from credit and debit cards to online casinos. Although risky, players often use e-wallets as an alternative.
