A lot of players are uncomfortable entrusting their cash to the Random Number Generators that power virtual casino games. As a result, live dealer gaming has become exceptionally popular with online gamblers. For years the only way punters were able to play at an online casino was to download software to their Windows PC. Now, thanks to HTML5 technology, the vast majority of online casinos offer a 'no-download' alternative that can be played in a user's favourite browser. Also because of the versatility of HTML5, Mac users can now join in the gambling fun too!
History of online casinos
It might be hard to believe but igaming has been in existence since 1994. That was the year when the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda passed laws enabling it to grant the world’s first online gambling license.
Meanwhile, the first online gaming technology was created in another island nation, the Isle Of Man. That’s where, in 1994, Microgaming – still a significant force in the field - made available the computer programmes that paved the way for the earliest online casinos.
Two years later, in the United States, the Kahnawake Gambling Commission was established. In the first instance, this Native American body was formed to regulate online gaming in the titular Mohawk territory. However, the KGC was also empowered to grant igaming licenses the world over.
Although these significant developments took place in the mid-’90s, it wasn’t until the end of the decade that online gaming really took off. Indeed, by 1998, the sector’s annual revenues were estimated to be in the region of $830 million. With the earliest online poker rooms opening for the business in the same year, it wasn’t long before the $1 billion was eclipsed.
As of 2008, worldwide annual gaming revenue was estimated by H2 Gambling Capital to be in the region of $21 billion.
New online casinos - June 2018
Whay-hey! The nights are getting shorter, the weather's getting (slightly) warmer, and the outlook is positively sunnier! The English summer is on its way, which means of course the odd blistering day among days and days of rain. On a rainy day why not remove your gloom by playing at one of these three shiny new online casinos?
There's a new face on the online casino scene, and he (or she) goes by the name of Jo Reels. He's just opened up the brand new Joreels Casino, a new MT SecureTrade casino with software from NetEnt, Betsoft (not UK players) and Play'n GO. There's plenty to see and even more to play, with countless slots and a decent selection of table games. The icing on the cake though is a one hundred percent welcome bonus up to £200 available to new players making their first deposit at Mr Reels' casino. Why not pop along and see if Joreels will become your brand new best casino buddy?
Speaking of making new casino friends, how about another potential new gambling chum? Some laid-back dude named Larry Laffer has just opened a new online casino and in a boost to his ego has named it Larry Casino. We're not one hundred percent sure that Larry can be trusted as he gives his birth year as 1987 - judging by his picture it's more likely 1967 is the truth! What we are sure about though is the welcome deals available for new players that Larry is offering. There's a £300 welcome bonus split over your first three deposits, one hundred free spins over your first four deposits, and a free 'jokebox' - whatever that means!
Those online casino experts Imperium Network Solutions are back this month with yet another impressive addition to their casino portfolio. This casino is called Casilando Casino, with the subtitle 'Kings & Queens'. INS seem to be setting a new trend in online casinos, although a few of their offerings are being to look a little 'samey'. You can grab yourself ten free spins for nothing when you sign up to play here, and you can top up that number to one hundred when you make your first deposit. Also available - a one hundred percent matched bonus up to £300 for first timers at the site!

UK casino licensing and regulation
All iGaming activity in the United Kingdom is regulated by the 2005 Gambling Act as elaborated by the UK Gambling Commission. This legislation empowers online facilities located in the United Kingdom to make available betting, gaming and lotteries, provided the appropriate remote gaming license has been acquired
UK gambling law incorporates the following ‘licensing objectives’ which govern all of the Commission’s decisions:
· Preventing online gambling from being a source of crime, being associated with crime or being used to support crime.
· Ensuring online gambling business is conducted in a fair and open way;
· Protecting underage and vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by online gambling (see Responsible Gambling).
With regard to licensing, if one is to operate an online casino in the UK, the business holder requires one of the following:
- Bingo operating license
- Casino operating license
- General betting operation license
- Pool betting operation license
- Betting intermediary operation license
- Lottery operation license
It’s important to note that a license permitting remote gambling will not also permit terrestrial operation. Also, it should be borne in mind that a license may permit more than one of the activities listed above – so an igaming operator that offers both casino games and sports betting would need only one remote gambling license covering both of these elements.
The 2005 Act makes specific reference to the provision of ‘gambling software’, which is defined as computer software for use in connection with remote gambling. To provide such software, the supplier will need a gambling software license.
The process under which an applicant applies for a remote operating license is detailed and thorough. In the first instance, the applicant must:
- Identify the activity which he intends to be authorized by the license.
- Specify an address in the UK at which the documents can be served.
- State whether the applicant or their relevant principles have been convicted of an offence.
In addition to the above, the Gambling Commission is directed by the 2005 Act to take into account the applicant’s suitability to carry on the business, as well as the suitability of the equipment which is to be used. The commission must also have regard to the integrity of the applicant and of other people relevant to the application, as well as the competence of the applicant to carry on the licensed activities in a manner consistent with the aforementioned licensing objectives.
As for the documents needed to apply for a license, they can be found at the official website of the Gambling Commission:
Note that binary options, and other financial related products, can be subject to different regulatory requirements.
Responsible gambling might be defined as staying in control of the amount of time and money one spends gaming or betting. With regard to online gambling, this means acknowledging that igaming is but one form of entertainment in a balanced recreational lifestyle. As such, it is important never to spend more money or time than one can reasonably afford.
Likewise, as one should never gamble more than one can afford to lose, you should always resist the urge to chase your losses. To this end, it is best to consider any win to be a bonus.
With regard to online gambling, anyone experiencing gaming issues is advised to make use of the self-exclusion and spending limit tools that most sites offer.
Although problem gambling is far from uncommon, there are now a wide range of resources that are well equipped to help anyone with betting issues.
Among the organisations in the UK offering help and advice, the following are all highly-regarded: Game Aware, GamCare, Responsible Gambling Trust and Gamblers Anonymous.
How we find your right casino
At RightCasino, we employ a dedicated team of casino experts who rigorously evaluate dozens of casino websites every single month. The criteria of assessment include:
- Safety and security
- Customer support
- Game quality
- Product variety
- Bonuses and promotions
- Cashier and banking
- Design and usability
- Device compatibility
- Regional availability
Each of these factors is given a score out of 10, totting up to an overall score out of 100 for the whole casino. There are also nearly 600 secondary criteria entered behind the scenes. When users arrive on the site, they specify their gaming, language and banking preferences. All this data is used by our smart casino finder to filter our featured casinos and present users with the right gambling destinations for them.
The process is simple, reliable and totally unbiased, because the filtering process is mostly controlled by the player. Our goal is to find you your right casino – we will NEVER recommend an unsuitable casino just because we have been offered a better commission, for example.
