Sheffield casinos

What price gamblers stealing big in the UK’s Steel City?

We have a lot to thank Sheffield for. Heaven 17, the Human League, Jarvis and Joe Cocker,  Henderson's Relish – yes, there’s a lot more to the city than steel, Sean Bean and two under-performing football teams.

Visit Sheffield today and you’ll also discover a quartet of top-notch gaming houses. Across the board, the quality offered by the city’s establishments is so extraordinary that, if gambling’s your thing, you might consider upping sticks and setting up home in South Yorkshire.

Were you to make such a move, you’d find a range of other entertainment options in and around the region. Besides Sheffields United and Wednesday, Rotherham’s not too far away. And then you’ve got the Eagles rugby league team, the Steelers ice hockey side, not forgetting The Crucible, the home of the World Snooker Championships. Doncaster, with its race course, greyhound stadium and League One football team, is also relatively close at hand.

Should you prefer to stay where you are, Sheffield remains a great place for the itinerant gambler to visit. So pop on some Pulp, grab hold of your cutlery and head directly to the hometown of Gary Cahill, Jessica Ennis-Hill and the world’s nicest man Michael Palin.

Another superb Sheffield casino, the Grosvenor benefits from a modern look and a central location. But this isn’t what makes it the perfect place for a night’s gambling. No, the reasons for that are daily poker tournaments, a brilliantly laid-out gaming floor, a cracking steak-centric restaurant and a bar that’s so laid-back, it’s almost horizontal. That the Sheffield Grosvenor also features a karaoke bar will be considered either a huge plus or a massive minus, depending perhaps on your state of inebriation. While you might not want to sing for your supper, the G guarantees every visitor a great time.

Another town, another Genting casino. The Sheffield Genting is no ordinary venue, however. For one thing, the design of the building it’s housed in is bizarre, verging on barking mad. For another, it features one of the country’s largest gaming floors. Here you’ll find all your favourite casino games, together with a fair smattering of students, the Genting being situated just over the road from the Sheffield Hallam University. But don’t let the PhDs put you off – as easy to reach as it is very well appointed, St Paul’s Place provides one of the most sublime gambling experiences to be had in South Yorkshire. Just don't mind the pesky students preying on the free buffet!

Looking very good on the back of its recent £1.6 million refit, Napoleons Ecclesall offers a rich variety of casino games together with a full diary of the ‘how to play’ events which have become something of the chain’s speciality. There’s also a range of cut-price offers available to new members and corporate customers. Factor in a restaurant that should satisfy any appetite and a bar capable of quenching any thirst and the Napoleons Ecclesall wonderfully rounds out the steel city’s superb selection of casinos. The restaurant and bar area are located on the top floor, with the roulette and blackjack tables a staircase away. The Steel City's footballers tend to gravitate to the venue, with a gaggle of glamorous females often in toe.

One of two Napoleons establishments in the city, the Owlerton venue is the perfect place for poker parties. Whether you’re looking to mark your imminent marriage or your inevitable divorce, Napoleons Owlerton offers a range of celebration packages. It also hosts very popular ‘how to play’ nights for all you budding rounders out there. It's a hop across from the Hillsborough dog tracks,  and offers a massive car park. Though it has a welcoming bar and an excellent restaurant, you get the impression Owlerton isn’t trying to compete with Sheffield’s big CBD casinos. It’s simply happy to carve its own niche, and a very nice niche it is, too. Don't expect to see any Sheffield Wednesday footballers - they tend to shun this working-class venue in favour of the swankier Napoleons on 'Eccy' Road.
